Taiwan Equity Movers: AU Optronics, Nan Ya Plastics, Hotai

Shares of the following companies had unusual moves in Taiwan trading. Stock symbols are in parentheses and prices are as of the close in Taipei.

The benchmark Taiex Index sank 1.6 percent to 7,639.82, the lowest close since Feb. 1, after the stock-exchange chairman said the island is likely to impose a capital-gains tax on share transactions.

AU Optronics Corp. (2409) (2409 TT) gained 4.7 percent to NT$14.45, the biggest gain since Feb. 24. The flat-panel maker will ship advanced active-matrix organic light-emitting diode, or AMOLED, displays for use in Sony handsets, the Commercial Times reported, without saying where it got the information. The company said it doesn’t comment on clients or products, according to a stock-exchange statement today.

Hotai Motor Co. (2207) (2207 TT) slumped 6.9 percent to NT$221.50, the biggest drop since Oct. 28, 2008. The company was cut to reduce, an equivalent of sell, from hold at BNP Paribas SA.

Nan Ya Plastics Corp. (1303) (1303 TT) slid 5.5 percent to NT$62, the most since Nov. 18. The plastics processor reported a first- quarter pretax profit of NT$1.7 billion, missing the NT$4.82 billion estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.
