South African Equities: African Rainbow, AngloGold, Richemont
The FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index (JALSH) advanced 0.3 percent to 33,664.46 at the 5 p.m. close in Johannesburg, a second day of gains. The gauge slipped 1.9 percent last week.
The following are among the most active equities in the market today. Stock symbols follow company names.
African Rainbow Minerals Ltd. (ARI) , a South African miner of gold and industrial metals, gained for the first time in six days, rising 2.7 percent to 184.85 rand. Management of the Modikwa platinum mine, owned by African Rainbow Minerals and Anglo American Platinum Ltd., will meet with South Africa’s National Union of Mineworkers today for talks on a strike at the operation, NUM spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said.
AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (ANG) , the world’s third-largest producer of the metal, slipped for the first time in three days, dropping 0.8 percent to 290.16 rand. The company halted tramming and rock-handling operations at its Tau Tona mine in South Africa on Mar. 26 after a person was killed in an accident.
Cie. Financiere Richemont SA (CFR) , the second-biggest luxury-goods maker, rose for the first time in three days, gaining 0.8 percent to 47.46 rand. Stanislas de Quercize will succeed Bernard Fornas as chief executive officer of the Cartier brand by the end of 2012, the Geneva-based company said in an e- mailed statement today.
Sable Holdings Ltd. (SBL) , a property investment company, advanced for the first time in more than 10 weeks, rising 0.6 percent to 17.40 rand. Earnings per share adjusted for one-time items for the six months through December rose 25 percent, the company said in a trading statement today.
