Ukraine Spring-Grain Plantings to Rise 29%, Interfax Says

Ukraine’s farmers will plant 29 percent more land with spring grain for the 2012 harvest than a year earlier, Interfax-Ukraine reported, citing Oleksandr Demydov, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s markets department.

Spring grain planting will be 9.98 million hectares (24.66 million acres), Interfax cited Demydov as saying. Wheat plantings will rise 23 percent to 350,000 hectares and barley 24 percent to 3.2 million hectares, he said. The area sown with corn may increase 38 percent to 5 million hectares, according to the Kiev-based newswire.
