Greek Oil Tanker Sinks West of Athens, Captain Missing

A Greek tanker carrying 2,000 tons of oil sank near Elefsina, west of Athens today, according to the Maritime Ministry press office.

The 48-year-old ship’s captain is missing, a spokesman at the ministry’s press office, who declined to be named in line with policy, said by telephone today. The rest of the crew was unhurt.

The vessel belongs to the Greek company Viamar and was carrying an 11-member crew, 1,800 tons of crude oil and 235 tons of fuel oil, the ministry’s spokesman said. A rescue team is at the site of the incident.
