U.S. Eliminates Federer, Switzerland After Davis Cup Doubles; Spain Wins
The U.S. eliminated Switzerland in the first round of tennis’s Davis Cup, as defending champion Spain advanced.
Mike Bryan and Mardy Fish defeated Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to give the U.S. an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five series in Fribourg, Switzerland. John Isner beat Federer and Fish defeated Wawrinka in yesterday’s opening singles matches.
Spain took a 3-0 lead over Kazakhstan as Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez beat Evgeny Korolev and Yuriy Schukin in straight sets. The Czech Republic beat Italy and Argentina defeated Germany in doubles to also take 3-0 leads that clinched their series.
Sweden beat Serbia and Russia defeated Austria to avoid elimination as Croatia took a 2-1 lead over Japan. Canada and France are tied 1-1 going to their doubles match later today. The first round ends tomorrow with two reverse singles matches in each series.
