Vazquez Mota Leads in Primary for Presidency, PAN Says

Josefina Vazquez Mota, a former education minister, is leading in a primary election to be Mexico’s National Action Party’s candidate for president, according to the party’s chief election coordinator.

Vazquez Mota, 51, the only woman contending for the July 1 presidential election, is leading the preliminary results with 55 percent of the vote, Jose Espina told reporters.

Ernesto Cordero, a former finance minister, has 38.1 percent of the vote, while Santiago Creel, who was interior minister during the administration of Vicente Fox, was third with 6.1 percent, according to Espina.

More than 1.8 million party members were slated to vote today, according to Vazquez Mota’s website.
