Azarenka Wins First Set Against Sharapova in Australian Open Women’s Final

Victoria Azarenka won the first set of her Australian Open women’s final against Maria Sharapova 6-3 as she seeks her first Grand Slam tennis title.

Azarenka, the third seed from Belarus, is playing in her first major final. Sharapova, the No. 4 seed from Russia, last won a Grand Slam title four years ago when she took the championship at Melbourne Park.

The winner of the match will take the WTA’s No. 1 ranking when the list is officially updated Jan. 30.

Defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia faces No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal of Spain tomorrow in their third straight meeting in a Grand Slam final. Djokovic won the previous two to secure the Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles.
