The Montreal Canadiens fired coach Jacques Martin with the team in last place in the National Hockey League’s Northeast Division.
Assistant Randy Cunneyworth will be the interim coach through the end of the season, the Canadiens said in a statement on their website. The team also said that assistant general manager Larry Carriere will become assistant coach.
Montreal has a 13-12-7 record and trails first place Boston by eight points in the Northeast Division. The Canadiens have lost seven of their past 10 games and are 11th out of 15 teams in the Eastern Conference, where the top eight make the postseason.
Martin, 53, was in his third season with the Canadiens and had a 96-75-25 record with two playoff appearances. He previously coached the St. Louis Blues, Ottawa Senators and Florida Panthers and has a career record of 613-481-144 in 17 seasons.
