Houston Pilots Halted Ship Traffic on Fog, Coast Guard Says

Houston pilots had about 35 vessels waiting to enter the passage to the largest U.S. petroleum port after suspending operations yesterday when fog hampered visibility, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

About nine ships have left Houston via the Houston Ship Channel since noon local time, when fog lifted in the city, Phillip Woods, a Coast Guard dispatcher, said today in an interview.

Southerly winds are forecast to disperse the fog although it may form again overnight, the National Weather Service said today on its website.
