Bernanke Tells Senators of Europe Risk to U.S., Johanns Says

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke told U.S. senators that a worsening in the European sovereign debt crisis may harm the U.S. economy, according to a senator who attended the meeting.

Senator Mike Johanns, a Republican from Nebraska, said that based on Bernanke’s closed-door comments, the Fed chairman “acknowledges” that “if Europe starts to unravel” then “it definitely will have an impact on the economy.” Johanns spoke to reporters after leaving the meeting with Bernanke early.
