IBM Passes HP as Biggest Seller of Servers in Third Quarter
International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) overtook Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) in the third quarter as the world’s biggest seller of server computers, Gartner Inc. (IT) said.
IBM had server sales of $3.85 billion in the quarter for a 29.7 percent market share, the Stamford, Connecticut-based research company said today in a statement. Hewlett-Packard had 29.3 percent, followed by Dell Inc. (DELL) with 14.7 percent.
In 2010’s third quarter, Hewlett-Packard held 32 percent, versus IBM’s 30.2 percent.
Total server revenue rose 5.2 percent from a year earlier to $12.97 billion, according to Gartner.
