Austrian Environment Minister Nikolaus Berlakovich opposes the production of shale gas, Der Standard newspaper reported.
“The gas should stay in the rocks,” Berlakovich told the Vienna-based paper. “I am absolutely against the production of shale gas. Experience in the U.S. shows that the effects on the environment can be bad.”
Austria should rely on “renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy saving” instead of fossil fuels, Berlakovich said, according to the report.
OMV AG (OMV) announced yesterday that it had found shale gas in Lower Austria.
