World Cricket Chief Executive Lorgat to Step Down From Position Next Year

Haroon Lorgat, the International Cricket Council’s chief executive officer, will step down in June 2012, the sport’s governing body said in a statement today.

The South African told the ICC he didn’t want to be considered for the role beyond the end of his current contract, the statement said. Lorgat last year signed a one-year extension to the agreement he first signed in 2008 after rejecting an offer of a new three-year deal.

Lorgat had to deal with a terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team on its tour of Pakistan and the jailing earlier this month of three Pakistan players for taking bribes to cheat during a Test match against England last year.

The ICC faced other challenges including moving its headquarters from London to Dubai and earlier this year announced a six-year delay to its inaugural World Test Championship because of a lack of interest from broadcasters.

“In 2010, I felt there was much work for me to complete during 2011 which included protecting the integrity of the game and restoring the reputation and image of the ICC,” Lorgat said in a statement. “Having dealt decisively with the spot-fixing issues, delivered a highly successful ICC Cricket World Cup and adopted a new global strategy, I feel the time is right to move on.”

Lorgat’s successor will be chosen after a global recruitment search managed by Alan Isaac, the ICC vice president who’ll replace Sharad Pawar as president next year.

“I am extremely disappointed that I will not be able to work with Haroon during my term as ICC president,” Isaac said. “He has been exemplary in the way he has led the organization and deserves credit for his ethical leadership of the ICC.”
