Bears’ Jay Cutler May Miss Rest of NFL Regular Season, ESPN Says

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler may miss the final six games of the regular season after fracturing the thumb on his throwing hand, ESPN reported, citing unnamed people familiar with the situation.

Cutler, 28, was injured during the Bears’ 31-20 win over the San Diego Chargers yesterday, when he threw two touchdown passes and also ran for a score. It was the fifth straight win for the Bears, who are 7-3 on the season.

Cutler will undergo further evaluation today, though the injury requires surgery that will keep him out for at least the rest of the National Football League regular season, ESPN said.

Caleb Hanie would likely take over as the starter in Cutler’s absence. Hanie replaced Cutler in last season’s National Football Conference championship game, when the Bears lost to the Green Bay Packers.
