Sudanese Demand Compensation for Merowe Hydropower Dam

More than 700 Sudanese started a sit-in in the northern state of River Nile over compensation for a hydroelectric-power dam.

The protesters claim the government failed to offer adequate money and resettlement options for people affected by the construction of the Merowe Dam on the Nile River, 350 kilometers (217 miles) north of the capital, Khartoum.

The dam was completed in 2009 and financed by China, the Arab Fund for Social & Economical Development, the Saudi Fund for Development and other Arab funds.
