German Bundesliga Game Postponed After Referee Doesn’t Show Up

Today’s soccer game between Cologne and Mainz in the German Bundesliga was postponed after referee Babak Rafati failed to show up, the league said on its website.

The Associated Press reported that Rafati was found injured in his hotel room after what police say was a suicide attempt. Rafati was found with “no sign of any involvement by a third party,” Andre Fassbender, a Cologne police spokesman, told AP.

A telephone call to the Cologne police’s press department from Bloomberg News went unanswered.

“The referee didn’t turn up,” Cologne club spokesman Tobias Schmidt said on the Bundesliga website. “We were unable to find a replacement at such short notice. We can’t make any further comment.”

A makeup date for the match has not been set.
