Bolivia Says Chilean Rail Rights Violate Treaty, Cambio Reports
Bolivia’s government said Chile’s state railroad company violated an international treaty by granting another company rights to manage part of a line that connects La Paz with a Chilean port city, state newspaper Cambio reported today.
Bolivian Deputy Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Alurralde said the company, the Arica Port Authority, has “arbitrarily” raised fares in the past and that its management of the railway would violate a 1904 treaty, the Bolivian state newspaper said. The treaty, Cambio said, also defined borders and rules for Bolivia’s access to the Pacific coast.
“This empowers a business that obviously has interests beyond our international agreements,” Alurralde said. He added the government may seek international legal recourse, without giving further details, Cambio reported.
