Obama, Philippines’ Aquino Meet at Asean on Maritime Security
President Barack Obama told Philippine President Benigno Aquino ties between their two countries will strengthen, in a meeting at an Asian summit where the Philippines is pressing territorial claims against China.
Obama said maritime security, nonproliferation and humanitarian relief were on the agenda as he began a meeting with Aquino at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and East Asia Summit in Bali, Indonesia.
The Philippines is asking for Asean to play a role in resolving territorial disputes in the South China Sea when Southeast Asian leaders meet today with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who has sought to keep the issue out of regional forums.
