Providence Equity Partners Eyes Maple Leaf Sports Stake, Toronto Star Says

Providence Equity Partners Inc. has inquired about buying Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan’s 80 percent stake in the parent company of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team, the Toronto Star reported, citing an unidentified person.

Ontario Teachers’, Canada’s third-biggest retirement-fund manager, said nine months ago it was selling its stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, which owns the National Hockey League’s Leafs and the Raptors of the National Basketball Association. It isn’t clear whether the private equity firm has made a formal offer for the stake, the Star reported.
