Occupy Toronto Group Supports New Yorkers With Brookfield Place Protests

About 30 demonstrators gathered in front of Toronto’s Brookfield Place office complex today in support of the Occupy Wall Street protesters.

The group arrived at the office tower on Bay Street about 8:40 a.m., protesting for two hours against Brookfield Asset Management Inc. (BAM/A) as well as issues such as income inequality.

Brookfield owns a stake in Brookfield Office Properties Inc., the owner of Lower Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park, where hundreds of protesters were removed earlier today by New York City police after about eight weeks of demonstrations. Brookfield also owns Brookfield Place in the center of Toronto’s financial district.

The Toronto protesters who set up camp in nearby St. James Park over the past 31 days received eviction notices today, according to CP24 television. Police officers will enforce the evictions “immediately,” according to the news service.

“The reality is, they have destroyed the park,” Toronto city councilor Giorgio Mammoliti told CP24. “This is long overdue.”
