NBA Union Clears Way for Antitrust Challenge

National Basketball Association players said today that contract talks have “completely broken down” and that they are disbanding as a union, allowing membership to sue the league on antitrust grounds.

Billy Hunter, the executive director of the National Basketball Players Association, said his group wasn’t prepared to accept an ultimatum from the league’s management to accept a 50-50 split of revenue or face tighter salary limits.

Hunter told a news conference in New York that he expected to file suit within two days. He said attorney David Boies was joining the players’ legal team.
