South Africa Beats Australia by 8 Wickets in First Cape Town Cricket Test

Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla scored centuries as South Africa beat Australia by eight wickets in the first cricket Test in Cape Town.

South Africa needed 155 for victory on the third day’s play after skittling Australia yesterday for 47, the touring team’s lowest Test score in 109 years. Smith finished unbeaten on 101 and Amla reached 112 before being caught by Michael Clarke off the bowling of Mitchell Johnson.

Australia hasn’t lost a Test series in South Africa since the Proteas were re-admitted to international cricket in 1991. A 1-1 draw in 1994 was followed by four series victories. The second and final Test in Johannesburg starts Nov. 17.
