A U.S. trade agency said it will investigate a complaint by S3 Graphics Co. filed against Apple Inc. (AAPL) involving two graphics technology patents.
S3 filed the complaint Sept. 22 with the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington over technology used in Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The agency, which has the power to block imports of products that violate U.S. patent rights, said today in a statement on its website that it will investigate.
This is the second of two cases against Apple brought by S3 before the commission. The ITC is reviewing whether Apple infringed four other S3 patents, and a decision is scheduled to be announced on Nov. 15.
HTC Corp. (2498), the maker of phones that run on Google Inc.’s Android operating system, agreed to pay $300 million to buy S3.
The new case is Certain Electronic Devices with Graphics Data Processing Systems, 337-813, U.S. International Trade Commission (Washington).
