Manchester United Names Old Trafford Stand in Honor of Ferguson
Manchester United marked the 25th anniversary of Alex Ferguson’s hiring as manager by renaming a stand at Old Trafford in his honor.
Ferguson, who was hired on Nov. 6, 1986, was honored prior to today’s Premier League match with Sunderland. He walked out onto the field through a honor guard made up of both teams and Sunderland manager Steve Bruce, who played under Ferguson at United.
Old Trafford’s North Stand, the biggest at the stadium, will now by known as the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, the club said. It’s the first time in the ground’s 101-year history a stand has been named for an individual.
United also said it’s commissioned sculptor Philip Jackson to creatue a statue of Ferguson which it hopes to erect outside the stand prior to the start of next season.
