Bill Gates Interested by Financial Transaction Tax, Figaro Says

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) Chairman Bill Gates told French daily Le Figaro in an interview that he’s interested in the idea of an international financial tax, provided that the level is not too high.

Gates told the newspaper that he’s “fascinated” by the fact that London and Hong Kong are able to raise substantial amounts of revenue by taxing financial transactions. Gates added that he’s in favor of taxing air and sea transport, and of increasing taxes on tobacco.

Gates made the recommendations at the request of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Le Figaro said.
