England back-rower James Haskell will play for the Highlanders in the 2012 Super Rugby competition as one of five overseas World Cup internationals contracted to New Zealand franchises.
Haskell, who played five matches for England at rugby’s four-yearly championship, will join the Dunedin-based team after a spell with Japan’s Ricoh Black Rams and will return to England after his season with the Highlanders, the New Zealand Rugby Union said in announcing the squads today.
The Chiefs roster includes Samoa captain Mahonri Schwalger, national teammate Kane Thompson and Tonga’s Sona Taumalolo, while Samoan fly-half Tusi Pisi will play for the Hurricanes.
Of the 153 players across the five franchises, 28 are new to the southern hemisphere’s elite provincial competition and 14 have changed teams since last season.
