Turkish Court Orders Detention of 23 People for PKK Membership

An Istanbul court ordered the detention of 23 people, including a professor of politics and a publisher, pending trial on charges of membership in the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.

Professor Busra Ersanli, who teaches at Marmara University in Istanbul and is a member of the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party, and Ragip Zarakolu, a publisher and human rights activist, were among those held by the court, according to state news agency Anatolia.

The arrests followed a series of nationwide raids targeting people with ties to the Union of Communities in Kurdistan, a group that prosecutors say is the urban arm of the PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the European Union.
