Senate Passes $182 Billion Spending Bill for Various Agencies
A $182 billion spending measure cleared the U.S. Senate today as lawmakers pressed to complete work on a stack of overdue budget measures.
Lawmakers voted 69-30 to approve legislation setting the budgets for space, transportation, law enforcement, food-safety and scores of other government programs for the 2012 fiscal year that began Oct. 1. The measure must clear the House before it can be sent to President Barack Obama.
The Senate next will consider a package establishing funding levels for the State Department, the Internal Revenue Service and energy programs, according to Senator Dick Durbin, the chamber’s second-ranking Democrat.
With today’s vote, the Senate has approved three of the 12 appropriations bills for the fiscal year while the House has passed six of them. None have been forwarded to Obama.
The government is being funded by stopgap legislation that expires Nov. 18, and lawmakers will likely have to approve yet another one to buy more time to complete action on the various budget measures.
