CDU’s Altmaier Says Papandreou Seeks Broad Mandate, Spiegel Says

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou’s decision to put the latest rescue plan to a plebiscite shows he’s “serious” about the country’s austerity program, Peter Altmaier, the chief party whip of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, said in an interview with Der Spiegel.

Papandreou is seeking “a broad mandate for necessary, internal policy changes,” Altmaier is cited as saying.
