Merkel May Aim to Cut Taxes by Easing Solidarity Levy, Bild Says

Chancellor Angela Merkel may seek to lower the surcharge on German tax bills that goes toward aiding ex-communist eastern Germany, Bild reported, citing information obtained from her office.
Reducing the amount raised by the solidarity surcharge rather than through income tax may make it easier for Merkel to secure passage of a tax cut in parliament, the newspaper said today. The levy adds 5.5 percent to Germans’ income tax, it said.
