Tottenham beat Queens Park Rangers 3-1 yesterday to extend its unbeaten run to seven matches in English soccer’s Premier League. It climbs one spot to fifth.
Gareth Bale got two goals and Rafael van der Vaart also scored at White Hart Lane for Spurs, which hasn’t lost a league game since August. Jay Bothroyd replied for QPR with his first goal for the club.
Tottenham moves to 19 points, behind Chelsea and Newcastle on goal difference. Manchester City leads the standings with 28 points, five ahead of Manchester United.
QPR goalkeeper Paddy Kenny reacted quickly to block a shot by Van der Vaart and prevent Spurs taking the lead after two minutes.
The visitors then had to make a defensive change as Fitz Hall suffered a leg injury after nine minutes, with Danny Gabbidon coming on to replace him.
Emmanuel Adebayor headed wide after 13 minutes for Spurs, which took the lead seven minutes later. Van der Vaart broke forward and passed to Aaron Lennon, who set up Bale to fire past Kenny.
It was 2-0 on 33 minutes as Van der Vaart scored for a fifth straight league game, slipping a low shot into the corner of the net.
Tottenham continued to create chances at the end of the first half and after the interval, before Bothroyd headed in from close range for QPR.
Bale re-established the home team’s two goal advantage with 18 minutes remaining. The Welshman curled a shot past Kenny from the edge of the penalty area for his second goal of the game.
“Suddenly they got a lifeline at 2-1 and it changes games so that third goal was important,” Spurs manager Harry Redknapp told Sky Sports.
