Google Expands ‘Offers’ Coupon Service to Add Gilt, Tippr
Google Inc. (GOOG), the world’s biggest Internet-search company, added partners including Gilt City and Tippr to its Offers daily-deal service as the company expands the coupon program to compete with Groupon Inc.
Offers now has more than a dozen partners, Mountain View, California-based Google said today in a blog posting. Google said it’s also adding categories for adventure sports, luxury experiences and classes, as well as a personalization quiz to make it easier for users to find deals.
Google entered the daily-deals market this year to boost sales beyond its search-based advertising business. The expansion comes as Chicago-based Groupon, the largest provider of online coupons, seeks to raise as much as $540 million in an initial public offering that may value the company at about $11.4 billion. The IPO may be completed on Nov. 3, according to Bloomberg data.
Groupon last year walked away from a $6 billion acquisition offer from Google, according to people familiar with the matter.
Google rose 2.5 percent to $600.78 at 1:39 p.m. New York time. The shares dropped 1.3 percent this year before today.
