Tata Chemicals Plans to Build New Soda-Ash Plant in Kenya

Tata Chemicals Ltd. (TTCH)’s Kenyan unit commissioned a new plant in the East African country that will produce 200,000 metric tons of “premium” soda ash a year, said Michael Odera, managing director of Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd.

The company may consider boosting output if the global economy impoves, Odera told reporters today in Magadi, 90 kilometers (56 miles) southwest of the capital, Nairobi. Tata’s existing plant produces 350,000 tons, he said.

Tata Chemicals is Africa’s biggest producer of soda ash, which is used in the manufacture of glass bottles and glass for house and car windows, Odera said.
