Rina Becomes Hurricane in Caribbean Sea

Hurricane Rina developed today in the western Caribbean Sea and will probably strengthen further as it moves to the northwest, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in a special advisory at 2 p.m. East Coast time.

Rina’s top winds are 75 miles (121 kilometers) per hour, up from 40 earlier today, making it a Category 1 hurricane, the center said. The system may become a major storm by late tomorrow, according to the NHC.
