Jon Lester, Josh Beckett and John Lackey consumed beer in the dugout during games in which they weren’t pitching, Boston’s WHDH-TV reported last week. Baseball is looking into the report and may ban alcohol for all 30 teams, MLB Executive Vice President for Baseball Operations Joe Torre told reporters yesterday before Game 4 of the World Series, the Daily News said.
“We should be role models for the youngsters and how they behave,” the newspaper cited Torre as saying. “It’s something we’ll certainly look at.”
Red Sox spokeswoman Pam Ganley didn’t respond to an e-mail seeking comment on Torre’s remarks. Last week the team released e-mailed statements from former manager Terry Francona as well as Lester, Beckett and Lackey denying the allegations.
A number of teams already have an alcohol ban in place, Torre said.
