Anglo American Plc (AAL), the company with the biggest weighting on South Africa’s benchmark stock index, releases third-quarter production figures at 8 a.m. Johannesburg time.
Anglo American Platinum Ltd. and Kumba Iron Ore Ltd. (KIO), companies controlled by Anglo American, will also release production figures for the three months.
WHAT TO WATCH:
* Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan speaks at the Financial
Cooperatives Indaba in Cape Town at 9 a.m., Deputy Finance
Minister Nhlanhla Nene will also speak.
* The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries holds a
press briefing in Pretoria at 10 a.m.
* The Southern African Rail Association holds a media briefing
in Johannesburg at 10:30 a.m. ahead of its Nov. 1 to 3
conference.
* Zwelinzima Vavi, the secretary general of the Congress of
South African Trade Unions, speaks at a union event in Durban at
1 p.m.
* Trevor Manuel, South Africa’s planning minister, speaks at the
Top 100 Companies Awards banquet in Johannesburg at 7 p.m.
* The Competition Appeal court hears a review and appeal
application lodged by three government ministries against Wal-
Mart Stores Inc.’s takeover of Massmart Holdings Ltd. in Cape
Town.
* Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is on an official visit to
Finland, Sweden and Denmark.
CONFERENCES:
* The China Africa Business Forum 2011 takes place at Gallagher
Estate in Johannesburg.
* The Financial Cooperatives Indaba takes place in Cape Town
from Oct. 19-21.
MARKETS:
* The rand fell 0.4 percent to 8.0281 per dollar at 6:22
p.m. yesterday in Johannesburg.
* The FTSE/JSE Africa All-Share Index rose 0.5 percent to
31,197.35 yesterday.
* The yield on the 13.5 percent government bond due September
2015, known to traders as the R157, rose 8 basis points
to 6.68 percent late yesterday.
EQUITY MOVERS AND COMPANY NEWS:
* Anglo American Plc (AGL SJ), Anglo American Platinum Ltd. (AMS
SJ) and Kumba Iron Ore Ltd. (KIO SJ): The companies release
third quarter production statements.
* Massmart Holdings Ltd. (MSM SJ): The Competition Appeal court
hears a review and appeal application lodged by three government
ministries against Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s takeover of Massmart.
* Telkom South Africa Ltd. (TKG SJ): The Competition Tribunal
holds hearings on Telkom’s charges for broadband services in
