TAIWAN DAYBOOK: Taiwan Aims to Sign China Peace Deal in 10 Years

Taiwan aims to sign a peace agreement with China within 10 years, provided there is domestic consensus, mutual trust and parliamentary supervision, President Ma Ying-jeou said in a briefing in Taipei yesterday.

Ma reiterated his mainland policy of “no unification, no independence and no use of force under the framework of the Republic of China constitution.”


WHAT TO WATCH:
* Taiwan’s dollar rises to the strongest level in over three
weeks, gaining 0.7 percent to NT$30.100 to the U.S. dollar
* Yield on the government’s 2 percent bonds due July 2016, the
most-traded securities, rose three basis points to 1.072
* The benchmark Taiex gained 1.4 percent to 7,461.12
* Overseas investors were net buyers of Taiwan’s stocks; net
purchases were NT$7.8 billion ($260 million)

EQUITY MOVERS:
* Compeq (2313 TT) may book a NT$25 million gain from the sale
of its 37 percent stake in a Panasonic Electric (6752 JP) unit
* Catcher Technology (2474 TT) was downgraded to
“Equalweight” from “Overweight” at Barclays Capital by
equity analyst Dale Gai
* E.Sun’s (2884 TT) banking unit sells NT$2.9 billion of seven-
year unsecured subordinated debt at 1.8 percent annual interest
* Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (2330 TT) buys NT$1.12
billion of equipment and facilities from two suppliers
