Australian Open Tennis Will Pay Champions Grand Slam Record A$2.3 Million

The Australian Open will pay its 2012 singles champions A$2.3 million ($2.2 million) each in prize money, the most in Grand Slam history, Tennis Australia said.

Total prize money for the Jan. 16-29 tournament will be a major-championship-record A$26 million, the Melbourne-based governing body said today in a statement.

Novak Djokovic and Kim Clijsters each won A$2.2 million for taking this year’s singles titles at Melbourne Park.

Djokovic and Sam Stosur each collected $1.8 million for their U.S. Open victories last month.
