Ukraine Sugar-Beet Processing Rose by 22% From 2010, Union Says

Processing of sugar beet in Ukraine rose by 22 percent from a year earlier to 3.3 million metric tons as of Sept. 29, said Ukrtsukor, the country’s producers’ union.

The number of sugar refiners operating this season increased to 67 plants from 56, Kiev-based Ukrtsukor wrote today in an e-mailed statement.

Farmers had harvested sugar beet from 192,400 hectares (475,228 acres), or 36 percent of the planted area, as of Sept. 30, the union said. Harvesting began last month.
