South African Stocks: Anglo, AngloGold, Exxaro, Impala Platinum
The FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index declined for a fourth day, dropping 248.55, or 0.8 percent, to 29,812.66 by 9:41 a.m. in Johannesburg. The index fell 3.2 percent last week.
The following are among the most active stocks in the South African market today.
Anglo American Plc (AAL) , the mining company that makes up about 9 percent of the benchmark stock index, headed for its lowest close in nearly two weeks, falling 4.21 rand, or 1.5 percent, to 281.51 rand. Commodities slumped to their lowest in almost 10 months on speculation Europe’s debt crisis will worsen, curbing raw-material demand. Copper on the London Metal Exchange plunged below $7,000 a metric ton, to the lowest since July 2010.
BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP) , the world’s largest mining group, slid 6 rand, or 2.7 percent, to 218 rand.
AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (ANG) , Africa’s biggest producer of the metal, slipped for a third day, declining 7.48 rand, or 2.1 percent, to 347.62 rand. Gold tumbled on speculation European governments will struggle to contain the region’s debt crisis, threatening global growth.
Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI) , the world’s fourth-biggest gold producer, dropped 4 rand, or 3.1 percent, to 127 rand.
Harmony Gold Mining Co. (HAR SJ), the continent’s third- largest gold company, fell 3.60 rand, or 3.6 percent, to 95.50 rand.
Exxaro Resources Ltd. (EXX) , a coal miner, headed for its lowest in a month, declining 1.75 rand, or 1 percent, to 177.25 rand. The company agreed to sell its mineral sands operations in exchange for 38.5 percent of the equity of Tronox Inc., the U.S.-listed paint-pigment maker.
Anglo American Platinum Ltd. (AMS SJ), the world’s biggest producer of the metal, slid for a third day, dropping 16.11 rand, or 2.8 percent, to 555 rand. The price of platinum slumped below $1,500 an ounce for the first time since since August 2010.
Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd. (IMP) , the world’s second- biggest platinum miner, slipped 5.59 rand, or 3.4 percent, to 161.03 rand.
