Taiwan Stocks: China Airlines, EVA Air, Quanta Computer, Tatung

The Taiex Index gained 43.03 points, or 0.6 percent, to 7,535.88.
Airlines: EVA Airways Corp. (2618) (2618 TT) surged 6.8 percent to NT$17.35, the biggest increase since April 7. China Airlines Ltd. (2610) (2610 TT) jumped 6.8 percent to NT$14.20. The International Air Transport Association yesterday raised its 2011 forecast for global airline profits by 73 percent.
Quanta Computer Inc. (2382) (2382 TT) dropped 2.6 percent to NT$55.50. The laptop maker will retire more than 1,000 workers at its Linkou, Taiwan plant, after poor sales of Research In Motion Ltd.’s Playbook tablet computers, the Taipei-based Commercial Times reported without saying where it got the information. The Linkou plant had over 3,000 workers making Playbook in the beginning of the year, according to the report. Carol Hsu, a spokeswoman for the company, didn’t immediately answer calls to her office.
Tatung Co. (2371 TT) gained 3.3 percent to NT$12.40. The company’s land development project in Taipei may be worth more than NT$10 billion ($335 million), the China Times cited analysts as saying. The estimate for the value of the project is speculation by the media, the company said in a statement to the stock exchange.
