WTO Rules on Indonesian Complaint Over U.S. Clove-Cigarette Ban

The World Trade Organization rejected an Indonesian complaint that a U.S. ban on clove cigarettes is unnecessary. Judges also ruled that the ban gives clove cigarettes “less favorable treatment” than menthol- flavored cigarettes.

“The panel found that Indonesia had failed to demonstrate that the ban is more trade-restrictive than necessary to fulfil a legitimate objective -- in this case, reducing youth smoking,” judges said in a statement today on the WTO website.
