Montpellier Tops French Soccer; Milan Beats Juventus for Berlusconi Trophy

Montpellier leads French soccer’s top division after extending its perfect start with a 4-0 home win over Rennes, while Hanover joined Borussia Moenchengladbach atop the German league.

Souleymane Camara scored twice and Younes Belhanda and Geoffrey Dernis added a goal each yesterday as Montpellier moved to nine points from three games. Toulouse is tied on seven points with Saint-Etienne, which drew 0-0 with Marseille.

Paris Saint-Germain, owned by the Qatari Investment Authority, registered its first win of the season by beating Valenciennes 2-1.

Hanover joined leader Moenchengladbach on seven points in Germany’s Bundesliga after a 1-1 home draw with Hertha Berlin. Sergio Pinto gave Hanover the lead before Pierre-Michel Lasogga tied it for the visiting team seven minutes from the end.

FC Twente leads in the Netherlands after winning 5-1 at Heerenveen two days ago for its third straight victory.

Spanish matches were called off because of a players’ strike over insurance cover for their wages. The top Italian league games start next weekend.

AC Milan beat Juventus 2-1 to win the Luigi Berlusconi Trophy, an annual exhibition match founded by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the club’s owner, in memory of his father. Kevin-Prince Boateng and Clarence Seedorf gave Milan a two-goal lead at its San Siro stadium before Mirko Vucinic made it 2-1 in the second half.
