Canada’s Flaherty to Address Committee Friday on U.S., EU Debt Troubles

Canada’s finance minister Jim Flaherty and central bank chief Mark Carney will testify Aug. 19 at a parliamentary committee on the debt crisis in Europe and the U.S. budget deficit.

Flaherty is scheduled to appear at a House of Commons Finance Committee hearing that begins at 9 a.m. in Ottawa after an invitation to discuss the effect of global events on Canada, spokesman Chisholm Pothier said by telephone.

Carney will testify along with Senior Deputy Governor Tiff Macklem, Bank of Canada spokesman Jeremy Harrison said.

The hearing was called by committee members who held a special meeting yesterday during the legislature’s summer holiday. Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Aug. 8 he’s optimistic the global economy remains able to grow at a moderate pace, and urged other countries to address their “serious debt challenges.”
