Northern Ireland Beats Faroes to Go Third in Euro 2012 Qualifying Group

Pat McCourt scored twice as Northern Ireland beat the Faroe Islands 4-0 in a qualifying match for soccer’s 2012 European Championship.

McCourt got goals in the 71st and 88th minutes last night after Aaron Hughes and Steven Davis had put the home team 2-0 up at Windsor Park in Belfast.

The victory moves Northern Ireland into third place in Group C, two points behind second-place Slovenia, which has played one game more, and seven back of leader Italy.

The winners of the nine qualifying groups, along with the second-place team with the most points, qualify for Euro 2012 with co-hosts Poland and Ukraine. The remaining eight second- place teams will play off for the final four spots.

The next round of qualifying matches will be played Sept. 2. The 2012 European Championships will be played June 8 to July 1 in Ukraine and Poland.
