Springbok Captain Smit to Join England’s Saracens After Rugby World Cup

South Africa captain John Smit will join English Premiership champion Saracens after playing at the Rugby World Cup later this year.

The 33-year-old holds the world mark for most matches played as captain and most as hooker. He also is the Springbok’s most-capped forward.

Smit played with the Natal Sharks and the Sharks. He’ll join former teammates Deon Carstens and Brad Barritt at Saracens.

“I am delighted to have signed for a club widely renowned for the ferocious work ethic and spirit on the field and for the unique way it treats people off the field,” Smit said in a statement.
