National Grid Names Peter Gershon as Chairman to Succeed Parker

National Grid Plc (NG/), operator of Britain’s power-distribution network, appointed Peter Gershon as chairman from Jan. 1 to succeed John Parker.

Gershon, 64, is also the chairman of food ingredients maker Tate & Lyle Plc and left the board of Premier Farnell Plc (PFL) last month. He was responsible for GEC Plc’s defense business from 1994 to 1999, before the unit was sold to BAE Systems Plc.

An engineer by training, he led a review of the efficiency of the U.K. public sector in 2003 at the request of then-Prime Minister Tony Blair. He was knighted in 2004.

Gershon will join the board of National Grid on Aug. 1 as deputy chairman until Parker steps down at the start of 2012, the company said today in a statement.
