England set Sri Lanka a total of 230 in their rain-shortened opening one-day cricket match at the Oval in London.
Craig Kieswetter scored 61 and Eoin Morgan had 45 to help England reach 229-8. The match was reduced to 32 overs each after a lengthy weather delay.
The five-game series continues at Headingley in Leeds on July 1.
