HeidelbergCement to Open 200-Million-Euro Kazakh Plant in 2013

HeidelbergCement AG (HEI), the German cement maker owned by billionaire Ludwig Merckle, plans to start production at a 200-million-euro ($283 million) cement plant in Kazakhstan in 2013, the Central Asian nation’s Industry Ministry said.

HeidelbergCement has invested 70 million euros in infrastructure around the plant, which will produce 1 million tons of cement a year, board member Andreas Kern told Deputy Prime Minister Aset Isekeshev during a meeting today, the Astana-based ministry said by e-mail. The plant, which is located in the western region of Mangistau, may double capacity in the future, it added.
