M&C Saatchi Plc (SAA), the U.K. marketing agency formed by brothers Maurice and Charles Saatchi in 1995, said it won a contract from China’s biggest maker of personal- computers, Lenovo Group Ltd. (992)
“I’m particularly thrilled with our Lenovo win,” Chief Executive Officer Moray MacLennan said in an interview in Cannes today. “China is difficult,” he said, adding that “there’s not a history of advertising.” He didn’t give details on the contract.
Advertising companies are pushing into China and other emerging markets to tap growth in emerging markets. WPP Plc, the world’s biggest advertising company, said this month it will more than double the amount it sets aside this year for acquisitions to expand in faster-growing emerging markets.
M&C Saatchi said in March that business in China and India is “project based” as its clients in both markets are still “relatively small,” adding that that the company is trying to win and retain larger clients in both markets.
Lenovo, the maker of Thinkpad laptops, has increased its share of the global PC market against competition from Hewlett- Packard Co. and Acer Inc. (2353) this year, and is expanding in the market for smartphones and tablet devices. The company wants to capture 20 percent of China’s tablet market with its LePad, and demand for the device outstripped supply, CEO Yang Yuanqing said May 27.
M&C Saatchi’s sales last year rose 21 percent to 125.1 million pounds ($202 million). The company, which in January said it will promote Britain’s 2012 Olympic Games, is operating from 26 offices in 19 countries.
